IMPORTANT TIPS
We discovered the most commonly asked questions from new oilers. Important tips to help you get started with your essential oils can be found here.

APPLICATIONS
There are three ways to use Young Living essential oils:
Topically
A carrier oil is sometimes used during topical application to dilute EOs. Read the label on the bottle for dilution instructions. Young Living’s V-6 is a great carrier oil because it nourishes the skin, has a long shelf life, doesn’t clog pores, and won’t stain clothes. Other great carrier oils include olive oil, jojoba, avocado, grapeseed or coconut oil. Carrier oils will not dilute the effect of your EOs.
After applying an essential oil topically, if you choose, you can seal it in using Rose Ointment or Animal Scents Ointment. Animal Scents products can be used for people too!
Roll-ons are an easy way to apply EOs topically! Our favorite Roll-ons are Tranquil, Deep Relief, Stress Away, RutaVaLa and Breathe Again! Although, you can insert a roller fitment into any EO bottle to transform your favorite EOs to an easy-to-use roll-on bottle.
Dilution Tips:
The more fragile someone is (newborn or elderly), the more you should dilute the EO.
Dilute more when you are applying the EO to sensitive skin.
When in doubt, dilute!
It's never too late to dilute. If you applied the EO already and feel you need more carrier oil, just layer it over the EO.
What is a Carrier Oil?
A carrier oil is a vegetable oil—such as coconut oil, olive oil, or grapeseed oil—that can be used to dilute essential oils.
Carrier oils ensure that essential oils applied topically are comfortable to the skin.

If you are curious where to apply the oils,
then follow these simple tips:
-
Avoid contact with sensitive areas such as eyes, ears, genitals, and mucous membranes. If you accidentally apply it to a sensitive area, flush with a carrier oil, not water.
-
The feet are always a good place to apply the oils because of what we know from reflexology. Also, our feet have large pores.
-
Use common sense. If you need EOs for your knee, then apply it to your knee, not your feet.
-
If skin sensitivity occurs (which happens with some hot oils like Thieves or Oregano), then massage a carrier oil on the skin. It's never too late to dilute!
-
Citrus oils are photosensitive. Avoid sun exposure when using citrus oils topically.
-
Read the product label.
Occasionally, someone might find their skin to have a reaction (red or bumpy) after using EOs. If this occurs,
-
Stop using EOs (temporarily) and apply a carrier oil to the area.
-
Inspect the ingredients in your personal care products (shampoo, lotion, soap, perfume, cleaning agents…). Check ewg.org to see if the listed ingredients in these products are considered safe. If not, they may be creating a conflict on the surface of your skin when they encounter the EOs.
-
Consider swapping out toxic products you use for more natural ones.
-
Explore Young Living’s fantastic bath, beauty, and cleaning products to replace the ones you are currently using with less toxic options. You may also consider supporting the detox pathways in your body with the Cleansing Trio and Sulfurzyme
-
Hydrate: drink half your body weight in water, daily
-
Reintroduce EOs after you skin reaction has settled. But start slower. Don't use as many EOs as frequently and dilute more.

Internally
Young Living’s Seed to Seal™ promise is the reason we can confidently ingest EOs. Refer to the product label on the bottle to determine if an essential oil is approved for internal use.
Perfect for adding flavor to your favorite foods or using as dietary supplements, the Vitality™ dietary essential oils give you the freedom to share and explore some of our best-loved essential oils in a variety of nutritious and delicious ways.
With four distinct categories—Herb, Spice, Citrus, and Supplement—we invite you to explore Vitality™ dietary essential oils by adding them to your food or water. If you add oils to your drink, do not use a plastic bottle – a glass bottle is a better option. Experiment with citrus oils in your water, lime in your guacamole, and peppermint in your brownies!

By ordering clear vegetable capsules and filling them with EOs, you can make your own supplements. Young Living also has a world-class supplement line all infused with essential oils. Adding essential oils to your supplements increases the absorption rate. Softgels such as Inner Defense dissolve at a specific time during the digestive process to maximize results.
Whenever this website discusses internal use of an essential oil, it is referring to the Vitality™ EOs or Young Living Essential Oil Dietary Supplements.

Aromatically
How does the smell of a warm apple pie in the oven make you feel? Smells have a huge impact on our mood, relaxation, how we handle stress, and other emotional feelings. Did you know the quickest way to access the brain is through your sense of smell?
Diffusing with an ultrasonic diffuser is a great way to clean your air, affect your mood, and customize the aroma in your space! Resting in bed with a diffuser on your nightstand is one of the dreamiest ways to peacefully fall asleep. You can also enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy by smelling directly from the bottle. Do not use essential oils in a humidifier unless specified by the manufacturer.

5 drops Lavender + 2 drops Lemon + 1 drops Peppermint or 3 drops Vetiver + 3 drops Lemon

5-6 drops Purification or 4 drops Stress Away + 2 drops Peppermint

3 drops Orange + 1 drops Ginger + 1 drops Cinnamon or 5-6 drops Thieves

5 drops Lavender + 2 drops Lemon + 1 drops Peppermint or 3 drops Vetiver + 3 drops Lemon

HOW MUCH? HOW OFTEN?
Essential oils (EOs) are not medicine. There are no “protocols” when using EOs. It is analogous to eating a salad: If you need more vegetables in your diet, then eat a salad. You know a salad is good for you and you don’t need a professional telling you to eat two salads per day for three weeks. Instead, you know how much is enough. You eat until you are full. If you want more, then you eat more! EOs are similar to this because when you use them, it is a good idea to listen to your body. If you need more, then use more (or a different EO). If you feel better, then stop. If it is too intense, dilute. Simple.
EOs are powerful and a little bit goes a long way. In order to prevent waste, it is suggested to take a small drop frequently throughout the day rather than using 10 drops all at once.
