Essential Oils

During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is the most amazing time in a woman's life.  If you are reading this because you are pregnant or hope to become pregnant,

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

The +OILS community is praying for you

and your growing family.

+ O I L S is a community filled with moms and we are so happy for you.  We understand that this is an exciting time, but also a time of hightened alertness.  Many moms are concerned about essential oil safety especially during pregnancy.  Pregnancy is a beautiful time to incorporate essential oils into your lifestyle to maintain a healthy and happy pregnancy.

For some people it can be difficult to decide whether to use EOs throughout pregnancy, and there are a wide variety of opinions on the matter. It is important to discuss usage with a medical care provider  (preferably someone experienced with the french model of aromatherapy).

Some women choose to avoid excessive use of a few specific oils:

  • Clary Sage or Sage

  • Idaho Tansy or Hyssop

  • Fennel

  • Wintergreen

  • Blends and supplements that contain these oils

As with use in individuals who aren’t pregnant, essential oil usage is individualized.  Start with just a few drops of essential oils and diffuse in a large area. If you tolerate it well, you may consider applying essential oils to the skin after diluting in a carrier oil or inhaling them directly from the bottle.

Remember, this is your baby and YOU must weigh all the advise and take only what you and your health care provider decide is appropriate.  Do not make decisions based out of fear.  But instead, use resources and books based on research done about the complete oil God created, not synthetic chemical compounds or individualized consituents within an essential oil.

In her book "Clinical Aromatherpay: Essential Oils in Practice," Jane Buckle, Ph.D., R.N., states "There are no records of abnormal fetuses or aborted fetuses due to the normal use of essential oils, either by inhalation or topical application.  There are no records of a few drops of essential oils taken by mouth causing any problem either."

Mild essential oils, such as Lavender and Frankincense, may be used topically for healthy-looking skin during pregnancy.  If you are nursing a baby, it is recommended to carefully monitor your milk supply while you use Peppermint EO.  If you notice any decrease, then immediately stop the use of Peppermint.

There have been reports where non-therapeutic-grade essential oils (adulterated, synthetic, or poor quality) have possibly caused a problem during pregnancy.  For safety purposes, it is important to use essential oils that are of the highest quality not matter if you are pregnant or not.  Common sense is also another safety factor.  When starting with oils, it is advised to start low and go slow.

Please let us know if you are pregnant so we may pray for your growing family!
